• Wales sees a 3.7% increase in Language Learning at A-Level this year
• French entries increased by 9.5% on 2025
• German increases by 26.2%
• Spanish entries fell by 9.9% on the previous year

“On behalf of British Council Wales, I’d like to congratulate all students receiving their exam results this week, and especially those who have chosen to study a language.
“It’s really encouraging to see language learning at A-Level in Wales increase overall this year, with particularly strong growth in French and German. While we are disappointed to see a fall in Spanish entries, the wider picture shows that there is real enthusiasm for languages and a strong foundation to build on.
“Our latest Language Trends Wales report found that 80% of participating primary schools are now offering their pupils opportunities to learn a language. That early enthusiasm is hugely positive, but we need to make sure we nurture it throughout a young person’s education and encourage them to continue studying languages beyond the age of 16.
"Learning a language is about so much more than an exam grade - it gives young people the confidence to connect with people and cultures around the world.
"Whether studying, working or travelling internationally, language skills can open doors, broaden horizons and give you the confidence to make the most of opportunities both at home and around the world.
“The return of the Erasmus+ programme is an exciting opportunity to give learners in Wales the chance to experience other countries and cultures and see the real-world value of language learning.
“Wales is a proud, outward-looking nation with strong international connections. By giving our young people the confidence and skills to communicate across borders, we are not just opening up opportunities for them but helping to build the international relationships that will benefit Wales for years to come.”
