- There has been a decrease in entries for international languages since 2023.
- Entries in Spanish are down just over 18% after a jump last year.
- German is also down almost 5%.
- French is still the most popular language at A Level with 242 entries this year, followed by Spanish then German.
- Entries across all international languages still down compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
Ruth Cocks, Director, British Council Wales said:
"On behalf of British Council Wales, I'd like to offer our huge congratulations to all students across Wales who are collecting their A-Level results today - a culmination of years of hard work and commitment by these students, their schools, and their wider communities. This is always such a special time for young people, the chance to go and explore new avenues and make the most of the opportunities that will come your way.
“While we've seen a decrease in international language A Level-entries this year, we continue to recognise the importance of language learning in Wales and remain committed to supporting the Welsh government, schools, and educators to prioritise language learning.
"The advantages of language skills and cultural understanding are more important than ever, and as highlighted in our most recent Language Trends Wales report, languages are crucial for Wales's future in supporting international connections, collaborations, and trade relationships.
"To all the pupils receiving their results today, we wish you the very best as you embark on the next phase of your learning journey. The world is full of opportunities, and your language skills - be they in Welsh, English, or other languages - will open doors you never knew existed!"
