The project brought together Turkish artist Elif Ağatekin and Welsh artist Bonnie Grace, joined by Sally Stubbings at Nantgarw near Cardiff. It explored upcycling in ceramics, combining Ağatekin’s two decades of practice with Grace’s reinterpretation of Welsh traditions such as collecting jugs and domestic display. Collaborative works created during the residency featured in Re:Made, Upcycled and Assembled in Wales at the Ceramic Gallery, Aberystwyth Arts Centre. The exhibition placed their work alongside historic and contemporary Welsh ceramics from the University’s collection, while workshops engaged schools and young people.
At the Festival itself, Grace led a bilingual drawing workshop and gave demonstrations, while Ağatekin delivered the keynote address, a wide-ranging presentation of upcycling in ceramics. Both artists connected with audiences through talks and hands-on sessions. Their collaborative work was also shown in August at Ruthin Craft Centre, where Grace led a workshop that received glowing feedback.
As Ağatekin reflected: ‘A wonderfully planned festival and residency program… My ten-day experience was truly memorable… I especially enjoyed meeting Bonnie and Sally, who were incredibly supportive, and I’m truly grateful for their help.’
